The proper name for this pale green plant with small hollow white flowers hanging from the under part of the stalk is Polygonaton of Polygonatum, this plant not to be confused with the similar named plant Polygonum which is used to treat urinary tract infections.
The Polyonaton has some unique medicinal properties that can assist in treating bruises, pain, fever and inflammation; its fruit is a black berry about the size of a pea when ripe, it grows wild in many places but also in gardens, the root is white and tends to creep along as it grows, in some places it can be quite knotted, it is flat and appears round in many places representing a seal type look, from which it derives its name. Polygonatum comes from the ancient greek word referring to “many knees” related to rhizome meaning :mass of roots”.
Solomon’s Seal has been used to treat and clear external bruises and blows, by applying the bruised root mixed with a little cream and then the bruised leaves made into a stiff ointment with lard. The distilled water of the whole plant applied to the face and other parts of the skin can please the skin from spots or marks leaving the skin lovely fresh and fair.
