Your child’s health

The children of today are tomorrow's leaders; it is our duty and privilege to teach them how to live long, prosperous and healthy lives. The quality of your child's life begins with you. Your example will impact your child a thousand times more than anything you will ever say. The following are important factors that will help keep your child healthy and happy but if you do not emulate these principles then the chances your child will embrace them are low.

Sleep is essential to your child's development, health and happiness. Children need 10 hours of sleep everyday. Form a bedtime routine and stick to it. Life happens and routines sometimes have to change but try to make the routine as frequent and consistent as possible.

Your child's diet is essential to his health. Fill your cupboards and fridge with fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Read the labels; make health education a focus in your home. Without a healthy body your child is more susceptible to disease, obesity and depression. Talk about healthy choices; show your children what happens when people don't make healthy food choices. If your child shows resistance to eating healthy foods don't give up, persistence will pay off.

Reduce the amount of junk food that is consumed by your child. Everyone loves candy and cake and in moderation it's OK but it is not OK everyday.

Children need to play outside to enjoy and benefit from the fresh air, explore thier surroundings, challenge their creative nature and exercise. Instill a love for physical activity in your child. Visit the park, go on walks, play chase, play with them, enroll them in sports, dance, swimming etc...

Keep stress low. Children don't need to be overburdened with responsibility and stress. Find ways to help them embrace the world around them without placing extra and unwanted stress on them.

Teach cleanliness. Make washing hands a frequent event, teach your child how to blow his nose, brush his hair, get dressed and brushing teeth.

Remember, your example will validate these principles, if your child watches you do theses things and benefit from them then eventually they will want to follow your footsteps. Begin today to make sure the leaders of tomorrow, your children are healthy and happy.
