Mosquitoes are one of the most irritating and annoying insects. The mosquito can turn a fun day or warm evening spent sitting outdoors with friends into an irritating experience. Most of the over the counter mosquito repellents are often full of chemicals that are harmful to the human body and some merely don't work.

The best way to deal with them is to avoid them by figuring out exactly what attracts mosquitoes and what does not. As they say prevention is better than cure. Make sure that you don't allow mosquitoes to thrive around you.

Dark clothing attracts mosquitoes. These annoying insects are able to visually see dark items better from a distance than lighter objects. If you plan to be in area where there are sure to be mosquitoes, wear light colored clothing.

Another thing to which the mosquito is attracted is perfume or other products that are flowery and fruity in smell. Try to avoid wearing perfume when there is the potential for mosquitoes in the area. Mosquitoes are also attracted to the smell of perspiration. This means that if you're in an area where there are mosquitoes, and you've been exercising and sweating, you're likely to attract these insects to your body.

Another thing that attracts the mosquitoes is open, stagnant and dirty water. You will have to do everything in your power to keep away from the mosquitoes and have little hope of succeeding if you are going to be near such open waters.

Mosquito repellents are quite often useless either because of the fact that they are ineffective or because of their harmful chemical content. You will have to use other ways to keep your self safe from these mosquitoes. Which work without doing any harm to you.

Try using some natural oils that have proven to be effective as mosquito repellents. Known natural oils that seem to work are rosemary, cedar, lemongrass, citronella, castor, peppermint, clove, and geranium oils. Dab a few drops of one of these oils on your temples, wrists, behind your knees, on your neck, and along your shoulders. You'll find that these natural oils will irritate mosquitoes and keep them from landing on your skin.

Other natural ingredients that seem to have the effect of reducing mosquitoes are garlic oils, the scent of cinnamon and allspice, as well as the oil from the pennyroyal plant. When using these natural products keep in mind that you need to reapply them often. This results in the scent remaining strong smelling on your skin. Be careful, some of these oils if used heavily can irritate your skin. If you notice a redness or a rash, discontinue the use of the natural oil.

These natural oils work best on their own and if you use them in combination with other lotions etc they may not work their magic as their smell get lost in the other smell. You will have to careful if you want to combine these natural oils with any other lotion.

However, if all else fails you can simply try to stay as much as possible indoors. Worst comes to worst if you have to go outdoors use those strong mosquito repellents but sparingly.
