Stress from work. Stress from home. Concerns over finances. All these and more can lead a person to feel like there's no way out. Seeking counseling for any situation can make that situation seem not so bleak, and give hope that there's a light at the end of the tunnel. There are even more reasons to seek counseling, such as marital issues, anxiety issues, depression, maybe even the death of someone close. No matter what the issue may be, there are people trained extensively in counseling that are ready and willing to help work through just about any problem.
Some people like to seek counseling in a one-one-one atmosphere. It seems less intimidating, and some people just don't like to talk about their personal problems in front of other people. That is perfectly fine. Many practitioners have private practice for that exact reason, so they can counsel people individually in a more intimate setting rather than in a larger room with many people.
There are other people who actually prefer the group counseling atmosphere because they like the input that others can give them. Hearing someone else's point of view and seeing someone else's perspective on any issue is another way people find help in dealing with their problems. Group counseling can vary in size from just a few people to a larger sized group.
Individuals who have medical insurance may also have what is called a "mental health" benefit, which is part of their medical insurance. With a mental health benefit, someone can seek out counseling through their insurance so long as the provider accepts their insurance. Many people aren't aware that this type of coverage is available through their medical insurance coverage, so it is a good idea to speak with a representative from your insurance carrier to see whether or not your particular plan offers such coverage.
Many times if counseling is covered under an insurance plan, there are a few options. A list of participating providers can be obtained through your insurance company, so you can see who offers counseling in your area. Oftentimes too, if there is someone in particular who you wish to see for counseling, they may not be an "in-network" provider, but may offer their services to you as an "out of network" provider. One big difference is that by seeing a provider who is is-network, the co-pay is likely the same amount as if you were seeing your MD. If the provider you wish to see is out-of-network, then that means they will still accept your insurance, and the insurance company will pay a portion of their service fee, but your portion of the fee to pay the provider will likely be higher than if the provider was in-network.
Recognizing that you may need help in relationships, with an addiction, or just to build your self-image is the first step on the road to recovery. Counseling is an excellent way to take you on down the path. With a qualified counselor you can begin to heal yourself and get on with the business of living your new life.
