Do you meditate?

Meditation is an ancient practice that has withstood the test of time. Today, more than ever meditation can provide stability, comfort and a firm foundation for healthy living. Some people are uncomfortable with the idea of meditation because meditation requires one to leave the distractions of the present and focus on the simplicity of breath.

You would be surprised at how hard is can be to clear ones mind. Many people find this process frustrating and give up easily but if persistence proceeds then wonderful benefits can be had from daily meditation.

Posture is essential to successful meditation. The most important aspect of posture is having a straight back. A straight back does not entail being "rigid" rather a straight back is a back whose spine is lengthening in two directions; reaching towards the sky and reaching downwards past the floor. As the spine is lengthening in both directions it may appear straight but it is not. Actually, when the spine is lengthened correctly it has beautiful subtle curves; cervical, thoracic and lumbar curves. When the spine is lengthen ones breath capacity is greater in both the vertical and horizontal planes.

By sitting upon ones sit bones (ischial tuberosity), it is easier to lengthen the spine and achieve beautiful back posture. The sit bones provide a base from which the spine can grow out of.

After finding a position of comfort and correct alignment the next step is to allow present thoughts to be addressed. Closing the eyes really helps shut out any visual distractions. Take time to acknowledge what thoughts are present and then allow them to drift away and replace all energy towards breathing. Pay attention to the rhythm of the breath, what does breathing do to the body, how it expands and contracts the rib cage, organs, bone structures and muscles. By focusing upon breathing anxiety is released and the body is energized.

Meditation is a beautiful tool to increase mental, emotional, spiritual and physical health. Meditation can be done for a short period of time or a long period of time either way, if it is done frequently many health benefits will follow.
