Indian Yoga has seven centers of energy in the body.
The base or first chakra is located at the base of the spine, associated with anything of a material nature, including physical strength, structures, possessions and survival. The Indian name for this base chakra, is Muladhara, signified by the color red for the gland and body system for adrenals, skeleton, lymph and elimination system.
The second chakra, Sacral carries the Indian name Swadhisthana referring to the lower abdomen just above the genitals associated with sexuality, sensuality and reproduction; the color orange is used to highlight this chakra.
The wheel of energy referred to as the solar plexus is the third chakra and governs the inner power of will and self confidence. The position on the body for this chakra is around the navel area, relating to the pancreas, muscles and digestive system. The Indian name is Manipura identified with the color yellow.
The heart chakra is the fourth and is positioned at the level of the heart and associated with love, compassion, emotions and relationships. The Indian name for this chakra is Anahata using the color green to identify and representing the thymus, respiration, circulation and immune system.
The fifth chakra is associated with the throat area and is called the throat chakra. Using blue with the Indian name Visuddha for expression, creativity and communication. The main area of the body that this chakra is focussed on is the thyroid and metabolism.
The brow chakra is the sixth or brow chakra, it is positioned at the level of the forehead, associated with imagination, clarity of thought, intuition and dreams. This is represented with the color indigo highlighting the pituitary and endocrine system. Indian name is Ajna.
The seventh or crown chakra, is situated on the top of the head, governing understanding and our higher consciousness with the Spirit. The Indian name for this chakra is Sahasrara using violet as its color for the pineal and nervous system.
There are other chakras, but these are the main seven which are referred to most, specializing in their associated attributes and gland and body system.
