Qi Gong also referred to as Chi Kung is the Chinese philosophy and practice of aligning breath, in its physiological sense constituting, replenishing and nourishing the human body. Qi is often called "vital energy" because it is believed to be the motive energy derived from the essential substance for various vital processes, such as physical activity, mental awareness, spiritual health and the development of human potential.
There is some archaeological evidence that suggests that the first forms of qigong may be linked to ancient shamanic meditative practice and gymnastic exercises. The Mawangdui Silk Texts shows a series of Tao Yin exercises that bears physical resemblance to some of the health exercises being practiced today.
Qi gong is the English form of two Chinese characters: Qì and Gōng. The English definition of qi (or chi) translates to words such as breath, air, gas and vapour; it can also be used when describing the relationship between matter, energy and spirit. Qi, is also referred to in the West as "chi", this is known as a focus point for energy in Chinese martial arts such as kung fu, and often seen as an intrinsic life energy or vital force within living things.
Definitions of the word gong usually refer to "force" or "power", with success implications like "achievement" and "results". The two words are combined to describe systems and methods of cultivation and manipulation of life energy, especially for increased healthy living of all general aspects of the mind and body.
