These days with modern science being what it is, it can sometimes feel like technology has a solution for everything - or at least it soon will have. This is also the case with our skin where there are a multitude of miracle skin care products which can take years off you, make your skin darker or lighter, more refined, even make you look thinner! Whilst many of these creams and lotions are all well and good, looking to miracle cures such as these can make us forget the fundamentals of looking after our skin.

Here we will examine some of the fundamentals of skin care and mention where products can help make you look and feel great. Above all else, for good looking skin, you must think about skin protection. Sun is the number one cause of skin that looks old before its time. Some time in the sun is spirit-lifting, plus it helps dose you with vitamin D, so there is no need to stay out of the sun at all times. But the UV rays contained in sunlight are very bad for your skin and they can also lead to cancer of the skin. Do not allow you skin to become burned because this really is causing serious harm. And of all the skin, facial skin is most sensitive so use a hat that casts plenty of shade to protect your face. Also use a dedicated sun protection product on your lips.

Second tip: keep your skin clean. The world is full of little pollutants, and many people (men as well as women) use make-up or products that can clog the pores. You do not need to stop using make up, but you do need to clean your skin properly. Some people are happy enough using straight-forward old-fashioned soap on their body and face. For other people this product is too harsh - perhaps the majority find soap dries out the sensitive facial skin. In this case go to products that are offered for face cleansing and try to find the one that seems to be best on your skin. Of course you can narrow the search down by knowing your skin type (greasy, dry, sensitive and so on) but the most important thing is how your skin reacts to the product. Always pay attention to how your skin feels and make a choice that is a good combination of quality and value. This is an everyday product and should not cost you a fortune!

Hydrate your skin. The next most important basic rule for keeping your skin young and healthy is to keep it moist. This kind of care leaves your skin looking moist and taut and is key to good skin care. In the hot months this is even more important than during the winter. There are simply hundreds of products available for this, but again you should be able to find a good quality product that doesn't cost the earth.

At the end of our tour of the basics comes the exfoliant. The exfoliation stage should be done when your skin is not going to get irritated, when it is well moisturized. Summer exfoliation needs to be treated with care because our skin is often more irritable in hot weather. The key is matching the exfoliator you choose with your skin type. You must find a gentle exfoliant if you have skin that demands sensitive products. Also be careful to check if the product you elect is meant for use each day or less often. At the end of the day you need to learn to pay close attention to your skin so you will be able to discover what potions and lotions will be the very best for you.
