Reflexology is probably a word you are familiar but could you explain what it is to a stranger? Today's article will put in a nutshell what reflexology is in its simplicity.
Reflexology is also referred to as "Zone therapy". Dr. William H. Fitzgerald is considered the US founder of zone therapy or reflexology. Dr. Fitzgerald was a nose and throat therapist and searched for ways to help his patients. He discovered that there are specific points or zones on the body that correspond to the functions and health of the body's organs. This happened in 1913 and his discovery and theory was known as zone therapy and later in the 60's the name Reflexology was born.
Today reflexology is popular and effective therapy used and performed by many. Reflexology focuses on the foot. Different parts of the foot correspond with different parts of the body. The tips of the toes correspond with the head and can reduce tension headaches, migraines and hormonal imbalances. The ball of the foot corresponds with the heart and chest and can improve stress related problems. The arch of the foot corresponds with the liver, pancreas and kidney and towards the heel is related to the intestines. Reflexology can improve other symptoms such as digestive problems, insomnia, sports injuries, menstrual discomforts, arthritis and back pain.
Reflexology should not be painful actually it has the opposite effect on the body; relaxation. Most people leave a session of reflexology feeling very relaxed and comfortable and already enjoying greater health. If for some reason you experience discomfort during a session of reflexology be sure to express your discomfort to your therapist and they will work within your comfort level.
Generally a session of reflexology would last from 40 minutes to an hour. In this time you would have a consultation with the therapist discussing you health and what you improvements you desire. After the therapist has determined your needs you will remove your shoes and relax in a reclining chair. At this point you will relax while the therapist works the zones of your foot to help improve your health.
Finding a good reflexology therapist is integral to the success of your treatment. Therapists that come by word of mouth are always the best, if they are recommended by several people then you know that they will help you achieve your health goals. Other great ways to find a good therapy is to ask questions about training; how much training did they receive? Was their training with an accredited association/school? Are their credentials up to date? Do they enjoy their job?
