What is Abhyanga Massage Therapy?

Abhyanga or sometimes referred to as Snehana, means Oleation  which is oiling up. This is a full body massage which is usually done on a daily basis.    A variety of Ayurvedic warm oils are used to drain the toxins in the body towards the gastro -intestinal tract.  This type of massage therapy is quite nourishing and pacifies the three subtle energies known as doshas, relieving fatigue and increasing stamina.   The Abhyanga oil massage enhances the complexion and luster of the skin, it promotes longevity and nourishes all parts of the body, satisfying the whole body with complete rest and perfect sleep.

Abhyanga massage therapy is an ayurvedic external treatment where one, two, or more therapists can massage a selection of aromatic herbal oils to bring the body into complete balance.

This type of massage therapy involves manipulating the body with different strokes of pressure in a variety of ways including structured, unstructured, stationary and creating tension, motion, or vibration, either done manually or sometimes using mechanical aids. The therapists will target muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, skin, joints, or connective tissue, lymphatic vessels and organs of the gastrointestinal system.  Massaging can be applied with the hands, fingers, elbows, knees, forearm, and feet.  The patient can be treated while lying on a massage table, sitting in a massage chair, or lying on a mat on the floor.

Abhyanga massage therapy is a gentle but firm whole body massage from head to toe using a range of warm medicated oils, this inviting massage therapy  is done in a soft rhythmic way usually with one or two therapists massaging at the same time for forty to sixty minutes per session.
