Berberis Vulgaris or Berberidaceae, well known as the Barberry Plant, which produces a very pleasant acidulous fruit which my be eaten with safety, especially when baking tars and pies.
The Barberry is a bright looking plant in appearance with beautiful strong green oval leaves coming from a whitish stem, with its wonderful bright red berries it is an attractive plant, often found in wild hedges in some parts of England. The flowers are of small size and very pretty with a soft pale yellow color.
The Barberry has some unique medicinal qualities that have been used to help cleanse the body from choleric humors, scabs, ringworms and inflammation of the liver, also including control of ringworms and dysentery.
The bark of the stem has been used to help in curing of jaundice, there is also an excellent decoction made for gargling to battle a sore mouth from any cause.
The berries can act as a cooling agent and antiscorbutic and deobstruent, they are useful in helping with control of flammatory fevers, especially typhus fever and scurvy.
