Is it a myth or a truth that the birth control in the form of a pill make you gain weight? Most women have heard this and are reluctant to take the pill for contraceptive purposes because they don't want to gain unwanted weight. A research study was conducted and the results are surprising and helpful.
The study was conducted by the Oregon National Primate Research Center at Oregon Health & Science University. The study used Rhesus monkeys. Rhesus monkeys were used because their reproductive system is almost identical to that of humans. The reason why the study used an animal was because when studying humans there are many factors that are challenging to moderate exactly like food intake, exercise habits etc... By using Rhesus monkeys the scientists were able to control many factors making the study as honest as possible.
To begin with half the monkeys involved were of normal weight and the other half were obese. After careful moderation of food and exercise whilst taking the pill the results were surprising. The normal weight monkeys stayed about the same weight and the obese monkeys lost weight. In accordance to this study it seems that taking the contraceptive pill has been given a bad name with no truth. It seems that gaining weight due to taking the pill is a myth.
Obviously, Rhesus monkeys are not humans but this study suggests that the contraceptive pill does not change the metabolism or hormones that would increase appetite.
