Lapathum is a Greek word, which is the old name used to describe Docks, generally known today as Rumex, a genus of about 200 species of plants which include the Sorrel and the Dock.
The Red Dock is commonly called the Bloodwort, it can be used to clean the blood and strengthen the liver, the yellow Dock root has an advantage for choler blood or liver, it has the quality to cool and dry the affected area.
The roots of Red Dock boiled in vinegar have been known to help remove itch, scabs and the breaking out of skin, especially when bathed and soaked in it, hence using this plant to act as an antidote when stung by stinging nettles is very effective. The distilled water of this herb have the same qualities to remove itching.
Every part of this plant, including its roots have been used topically, drawing the away the sap or, as a powder, being used as a powerful topical agent for the treating of skin tags, moles, eczema, and other difficult skin conditions.
The Red Dock or Bloodwort originated in central England and has been used for centuries in the alternative and complimentary field of medicine, as with all use of herbs, we are encouraged to get expert advice from an experienced herbalist before making decisions as to what you need and how to use it.
